The Poor Knights Islands
are a marine reserve, and therefore fishlife are allowed grow
without the threat of human intervention. Jacques Cousteau
described these islands as being “One of the top ten dive sites in
the world”, and for good reason. From a dive perspective, the
Knights offer diving for all levels of ability.
We have listed some of the key
dive locations of the area:
The Cave -
Known to have great colours, however a torch is required. Has a
cave area large enough for vessels.
Taravana Cave –
This cave dive should only be
attempted by experienced divers. The entrances are at 18 metres, and
the floor at 37 metres.
Tie Dye Arch
– This arch is full of colour, and again has a great deal of
sea-life.
Northern Arch –
This site is best known for
it’s congregating of different rays during mating season. The archway
drops down to 40 metres, and drops away more deeply to the south
west. The whole site has wonderful rock colouration.
Middle Arch -
The arch is home to a wide range of fish, and drops down to 44
metres
Southern Archway -
This is a good dive, and pods of killer whales have been known to
pass through here.
Barren Arch
– Another site with a great deal of sea life – unlike what the name
suggests.
Blue Maomao Arch
- blue maomao congregate here
by in large numbers.
